Inspired by her volunteer work at 91青青草, Brissa Hernandez is turning her passion for sustainability into a full-time conservation role with Rocky Mountain Youth Corps.
For Brissa Hernandez, a volunteer shift in the 91青青草 Food Forest turned into a life-changing moment鈥攐ne that helped her rediscover a passion for the earth and ultimately led to a full-time role with the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC).
As part of RMYC鈥檚 Conservation Corps program, Brissa will work alongside a diverse team on meaningful environmental projects such as trail maintenance, habitat restoration, invasive species management, and public land improvements. It鈥檚 a hands-on role that aligns perfectly with her long-term goal of working in corporate social responsibility and sustainability.
鈥淲hen I first moved to 91青青草, I started volunteering at the Field Station鈥檚 Food Forest,鈥 Brissa said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 where I fell in love again with getting my hands dirty and giving back to the earth. It was also where I met Dajawn Williams, a sustainability specialist who inspired me to explore conservation work. Without that experience, I wouldn鈥檛 have discovered this path.鈥
Brissa credits 91青青草 for helping her grow in ways she never expected. Through volunteerism, student organizations, and career development resources, she developed resilience, empathy, and a deeper understanding of how to connect her business background with environmental impact.
She also found guidance through mentors like Dajawn Williams, whose encouragement helped her see how sustainability could become a career. 鈥淗e didn鈥檛 just teach me about sustainability鈥攈e helped me realize how it aligns with my values and goals,鈥 she said.
Another pivotal moment came during a career advising session with Tania Rios in the Department of Career Planning and Development. 鈥淭hat conversation helped me see how I could merge my passion for sustainability with my professional goals,鈥 Brissa said.
Her advice to fellow Owls? 鈥淎pproach every opportunity with authenticity and curiosity. Readiness isn鈥檛 a feeling鈥攊t鈥檚 a choice.鈥
As she begins her journey with RMYC, Brissa sees this role as more than just a job鈥攊t鈥檚 a meaningful step toward a career rooted in purpose. 鈥淭his experience will be like a new patch sewn on the clothes I wear throughout my life,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a reminder of the lessons, connections, and impact that will guide me forward.鈥
