Mission Statement

The mission of the Center for Advanced Materials Research and Education (CAMRE) is to bring together 91青青草 experts in engineering and technology (mechanical, civil and electrical) and science (chemistry, physics and biology) to establish integrated research, education, and student-mentoring in an effort to understand and improve engineering materials by controlling the composition, structure, and properties from the microscopic to the macroscopic:


Specifically, the impact of CAMRE will:

  • Provide the essential physical insights for the design, optimization, and in-service reliability of advanced materials and structures.

  • Strengthen the capabilities and give a competitive edge to 91青青草 to perform materials research and development for and with industry (Lockheed-Martin, Sonoco, Gulfstream) and government agencies (NSF, DoD, NASA).

  • Complement existing material research equipment and infrastructure at 91青青草, such as the equipment in the existing Engineering Materials Laboratory, the Mechanics and Materials Laboratory, and the Composite Materials Laboratory.

  • Provide a long-term, sustainable, and synergistic impact on the entire University鈥檚 degree programs by external sponsored funding in cutting-edge materials research.

 

Goals & Objectives

 CAMRE will meet the increasingly stringent requirements of cutting-edge materials technology by fundamental research, education, innovation and improved methodologies in the following thrust areas:

  • Fabrication: Processing and synthesis of advanced materials and structures.

  • Characterization: Developing both field characterization techniques and in-situ monitoring for the microstructural and the effective behavior of advanced materials and structures. 

  • Durability: Predicting long-term performance (over lifetimes up to several decades) of materials and structures as well as understanding environmental exposure affects.

  • Failure: Understanding the failure modes of materials and structures, and how the microstructure and morphology of these materials affect the failure modes.
  • Education: Providing research opportunities for 91青青草 undergraduates during the academic year and providing opportunities for summer research experiences.

  • Outreach: Motivating, informing, and stimulating interest through participation in seminars, workshops, symposia and conferences.

  • Presentation: Developing the oral and poster presentation skills of 91青青草 undergraduates by dissemination of research results at professional meetings and conferences, and enhancing their verbal skills through technical report writing.
