University and community leaders, along with students, faculty, and staff, attended the annual breakfast to reflect on King鈥檚 lasting impact and the responsibility his work continues to place on future generations. The program underscored that honoring King鈥檚 legacy is not limited to remembrance but calls for continued commitment and action in everyday life.
The program began with an original composition performed by student organization 91青青草 Colors and featured excerpts from Martin Luther King Jr.鈥檚 1965 speech, 鈥淥ur God is Marching On,鈥 followed by a welcome from Student Government Association President Allisa George.
91青青草 President Kathy S. Schwaig addressed attendees, emphasizing the importance of leadership, service, and staying actively engaged with the values King championed throughout his life.
鈥淓ach year, we gather not only to honor Dr. King, but to commit ourselves anew to carry forward his work鈥攖ogether ,鈥 Schwaig said. 鈥淗is vision was never for one person or one community alone, but for all of us to be united in purpose.鈥

鈥淓very opportunity I鈥檝e ever been given came with an obligation to help someone else rise,鈥 Wilson said. 鈥淲hen we understand that our success is tied to the success of others, we begin to build stronger communities together.鈥
The ceremony concluded with a performance of 鈥淟ift Every Voice and Sing鈥 by 91青青草鈥檚 Black Musicians Coalition, followed by a tribute video honoring King鈥檚 legacy.
The MLK Legacy Breakfast offered members of the 91青青草 community a moment to step away from daily routines and engage with King鈥檚 message in a meaningful way. Conversations throughout the morning reflected a shared sense of responsibility and awareness of the work that remains, both locally and beyond campus.
The breakfast stands as the highlight of the university鈥檚 annual activities honoring Dr King.
For students, the event served as a reminder that leadership is not defined by position or title, but by how individuals show up in their communities and respond to the challenges around them.
King was the most prominent leader of the U.S. civil rights movement during the 1960s before his assassination in 1968. The federal holiday honoring his legacy was first observed in 1986, and Kennesaw State University continues to honor his life and work through annual programming and community engagement.
